Experimenting with Tools

This project expresses a series of experiments aimed at familiarizing myself with Carvey, a product of Inventables. The product is a milling machine that uses x,y, and z coordinate data to carve into materials. I spent a little time reconceptualizing the “Three Wise Monkeys” as a design to be milled. Carvey and other milling machines are useful products for engraving in materials like linoleum, other plastics and wood that could potentially produce toxic fumes during laser cutting.

The machine uses toolpath data that can be obtained from illustrator as well as 3D files. The following project does not fully explore creating complex 3D forms, rather is an experiment in materiality.
