Sonny Gray next team odds: Wide-open free agency unfolding for AL Cy Young finalist

Sonny Gray declined his qualifying offer from the Twins, opting for MLB free agency.

Oddsmakers don’t seem to have any idea where he will end up signing this offseason, with no clear favorite separating themselves from the pack.

According to DraftKings, Gray has an 18.18 percent chance (+450 odds) to land with the St. Louis Cardinals, who are technically favored.

But they are barely favored over “field,” which comes in at +500 (16.67 percent chance), which would win if Gray signs with any team not named the Cardinals, Braves, Mets, Dodgers, Twins, Astros, Red Sox, Orioles, Yankees, Cubs, Padres, Blue Jays and Giants.

Gray is coming off consecutive seasons as one of the American League’s best pitchers, combining for a 2.94 ERA and averaging just less than one strikeout per inning pitched.

Oddsmakers at DraftKings say the Yankees have a nine percent chance to sign Gray, but we can probably cross that one off.

The reigning AL East champion Orioles have signaled that Gray is a free-agent target for them, leading to at least some value on Gray at this price of +900.

Gray struggled mightily as a member of the Yankees, leading to general manager Brian Cashman giving up on Gray after the 2018 season.

He was traded to the Reds for a competitive-balance draft pick in 2019 and prospect Shed Long Jr., who they immediately flipped to the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Josh Stowers.

Sonny Gray had a 2.79 ERA with 183 strikeouts in 184 innings pitched in 2023 with the Twins.

Long is no longer with a major league organization, signing with the High Point Rockers of the independent Atlantic League, while Stowers was later traded for Rougned Odor.

Stowers is currently a free agent after recently being released by the Dodgers.

Since that 2019 trade, Gray has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, landing in the top 10 in WAR among all pitchers in baseball.

His Cy Young competition is Yankees ace Gerrit Cole and Blue Jays righty Kevin Gausman.
