Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner divorce: Astrologer on why ‘love did not meet expectations’

They’re “Only Human,” folks and like half of all married couples, Joe Jonas and sometimes redhead but always a smokeshow Sophie Turner are divorcing.

The couple, who share two daughters and a dog named Porky Basquiat, have been together for nearly seven years.

Their story began in true millennial fashion when Jonas slid into Turner’s DMs. While Turner thought Jonas would be “a d–k,” on their first date (and consequently brought half a rugby team with her to provide protection should he prove to be a catfish) the two hit it off and were soon inseparable and deeply and mutually protective of their love affair.

The singer and the starlet announced their engagement in October 2017 with an Instagram photo of her ring.

The couple didn’t make their red carpet debut until 2018 when they wore matching gray and leather outfits at the Louis Vuitton fashion show at the Louvre in Paris.

The pair wed in Las Vegas in May 2019, exchanging vows and Ring Pops at the Little White Wedding Chapel with an Elvis impersonator as their officiant.

Among the attendees was Diplo, who, in a serious faux pas, live streamed the event on Instagram against Jonas’s express wishes. They followed up the Vegas vows with a ceremony in the French countryside a month later. Jonas and Turner welcomed daughter Willa in 2020 and an ‘as yet to be publicly named’ second child in 2022.

Speculation about their split began in August 2023 when Jonas was seen without his wedding band and news broke that the couple had sold their shared Miami mansion.

Turner has been notably absent from Jonas’s concerts and it was suggested by the press that the latter was shopping for divorce attorneys before he officially filed on September 5, citing that the marriage, like all of us is “irretrievably broken.”

With all those beautiful genes and good juju what broke bad and went sideways and how do the stars fall and fare betwixt these two? Read on to learn more.

Star crossed lovers

Sophie Turner was born unto us on February 21, 1996 making her a dreamy Pisces sun with a warrior hearted Aries moon.

Joe Jonas came to be and into being on August 15, 1989 making him a rise and shine Leo sun with a weirder than a box of hair Aquarius moon. Elementally speaking, the sun signs of these two equal a case of fire and water.

Both Pisces and Leo are big time into the big dream of love. Die hard romantics they go all in when it comes to relationships and both are prone to believing love can conquer and cure all things. Both signs are equally guilty of idealizing their mate and getting sad/sulky when their lived reality of love does not meet their expectation of it.

Ruled by murky, gossamer planet Neptune, Pisces people like Turner want to escape through or be saved by love. Conversely, lions like Jonas harbor a deep need to worship and be worshipped and low key relish the chance to risk it all and ride high on the fumes of fatal attractions and savior complexes.

Jonas speaks to this dynamic and his own lion heart in the lyrics to “Hesitate,” his “love letter” to Turner where he sings, “I will take your pain /And put it on my heart/I won’t hesitate/Just tell me where to start
I thank the oceans for giving me you/You saved me once and now I’ll save you too/I won’t hesitate for you.”

The “I thank the oceans” line is reportedly a reference to the Atlantic that separates their countries of origin but it pulls double duty as Turner is a water sign ruled by a planet named for the god of the sea. Strong work, Joe.

Leos are proud and fierce parents who often view their children as an extension of themselves and their role as parents a kind of sacred calling.

This is reportedly the case for Jonas who has assumed primary care of the couple’s two children during this transition.

Trine and true

In terms of aspects, Turner’s sun in Pisces forms a lucky duck trine with Jonas’s Jupiter, planet of expansion and abundance.

This aspect is often present in the synastry charts of parents and business associates, in both senses there is a pooled resourcefulness, a coming together for a bigger pay off, babies and financial boons alike.

Yet, sometimes we collide in order to bring forth but not to endure and in the case of Turner and Jonas what was meant to bloom and be bankable might not be made to last.

Astrology 101: Your guide to the star

Moon signs, meant to meet not to last

In terms of moon signs, AKA the soft underbelly, instinctual, inner child energy of the birth chart, Jonas has his in the fixed air of Aquarius whilst Turner’s falls in the cardinal fire of Aries. The moon represents our old wounds, deep needs and our approach to getting both met and mended.

Aries wants a reaction and Aquarius wants to exist in a place beyond time, space and emotion in the hopes that they can transcend base instinct and impulse. It’s the primitive survivalist trying to make it work with the lofty, ivory tower philosopher. They may be different enough for an erotic charge but are deeply challenged when it comes to understanding and fulfilling one another.

The sparks fly and the tempers flare because neither of these signs are big on compromise and both struggle with feeling alone in the world and unable to rely on or fully trust others.

This incongruity is further amplified by the fact that Turner and Jonas’s Chiron placements form a challenging square with one another. In astrology, Chiron represents the most painful point in our psyches.m The square aspect suggests that these two, through their relationship dynamic and specifically through the process of raising a family together, activate one another’s most acute and ancient aches.

While the pairing might bring these issues to the surface, both parties will need to heal independently of the other, a tall but not impossible order, especially for a pair of die hard romantics. Call it optimism folks but I hedge my bets that these two might yet find their way through their respective dark nights of the soul and back to one another.

Jonas’s moon forms a strong conjunction with Turner’s Uranus, planet of sudden change, lightning bolts, chance encounters and all thing unusual and unexpected. This aspect serves to explain the fated, magnets upon meeting feeling Turner remembers about her first date with Jonas. She told Jimmy Fallon that she knew from the jump that she would marry him, “I remember him leaving and I wept to my brother. I was like ‘I love this man so much!’ And I knew, and that was it!”

This conjunction lends itself to a hot and cold kind of chemistry, and abrupt and intense seasons of change. This may be why Jonas has been taking his wedding band off and on.

Venus retrograde strikes again

News of this split came on the last day of Venus retrograde, an astrological time span known as breakup season.

Not for nothing folks, news of this split surfaced on the last day of Venus retrograde, AKA breakup season, an astrological span of time that has seen all of reassessing our self-worth, earning potential and the roles we play and stories we play out within our relationships. This is the last gasp of this retrograde, a period that has borne witness to the dissolution of power couples like Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello, Jason Tartick and Kaitlyn Bristowe, Britney Spears and Sam Ashgari, Sophia Bush and Grant Hughes, Bebe Rexha and Keyan Safyari, Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez.

As with all retrogrades, what we release makes space for what we are meant to receive and it is my hope that Jonas and Turner are both bound for greater happiness, together or apart.
